 Senna produces a purgative effect that occurs 8 to 12 hours after taking. Senna causes a chemical irritation of the receptors of the mucous membrane of the intestines, amplifies the peristalsis (muscle movement of the intestines), which in turn produces a quicker emptying of the bowels, and reestablishes the normal functioning of the intestines. Senna does not interfere with digestion. Use in cases of chronic constipation, low blood pressure, problems with the large intestines, regulation of stools in cases of hemorrhoids, inflammation of the rectum, and anal fissures.
Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity, spasmodic constipation, spasmodic colitis, acute inflammatory diseases of the organs of the abdominal cavity, appendicitis, obstruction in the intestines, strangulated hernia, bleeding ulcer, acute hemorrhoids and inflammation of the rectum, abdomen pains of unknown origin, bleeding of the uterus, inflammation of the urine bladder, digestive hemorrhage, disturbances of the water-electrolyte metabolism. Women must avoid using this product during pregnancy.
